To identify the similarities and differences between French Preposition (FP) - Malay preposition (MP) focusing on FP of direction, location and place, namely "à". The similarities and differences between FP-MP were identified based on the Contrastive Analysis Theory, Lado (1957). The comparison results showed that there are similarities and differences between these prepositions. The similarity of FP-MP is in terms of the variety of forms and functions. The difference in FP is due to gender and number, either singular or plural. This is due to the variation factor of FP either in the form of simple preposition "à" + Noun or a combination of “à" + Article + Noun of place. The choice of FP of place should consider the nouns, gender and number carrying the meaning of "di" or "ke" in MP. The results of the study showed that the similarities between FP-MP help students, while the differences confuse students in choosing the right preposition. This study is expected to help French Language (FL) students understand the formation of FP, as well as help FL instructors to plan more effective teaching strategies.
